At the end of the summit, the final workshop sought to bring together the findings from the day and develop action plans for progressing the Queensland Climate Movement forward in preparation for the National Summit.
Some of the suggestions from that workshop are provided here.
Co-ordinate and network
We need to generate better mechanisms for linking up the diversity of campaigns, projects, groups and individuals working on climate change, both in cyberspace and in the real world. Places to begin to improve our co-ordinating and networking may include:
- Queensland Conservation Council
- climatemovement.org.au
- Queensland Climate Emergency Network
- Six Degrees
Grassroots Summit(s)
As a priority, we need to develop and circulate the proceedings to everyone involved, as well as establishing a shared contacts list. The contacts list will only be made available to attendees, although others may be included (for a copy of the participants list, see here).
Campaign Ideas
We generated a large number of future campaign ideas at the summit, some of which can be conducted by individual groups and others which might require a broad based coalition or collective. Some of the ideas included:
- Hosting of a climate camp in Queensland
- No-buy Christmas
- Solar-panel bulk buying group(s)
- Dirty Coal investment guide
- Establishing an urban renewable energy co-operative
Future Summits
There was general agreement for the need to hold future Queensland Climate Summits, and to ensure we maintain the broad-based representation present at this one.
Questions for reflection
- What does ’success’ look like for the Queensland Climate Movement?
- What opportunities are there to bring about change more effectively?
